Our Human Library segment focuses on the stories of real people who have made a difference to STEM around the world and have shown that being part of a minority does not stop amazing people from doing incredible things. We cover many different careers and STEM fields within this library, showcasing brilliant people who have overcome backlash or struggles due to certain characteristics.
Our hope is to inspire our students to do the same, as well as teach parents, teachers and employers about these role models and their impact on our day-to-day lives.

Biography
Dr. Joan Murrell Owens (1933–2011) was a pioneering American marine biologist and the first African American woman to earn a PhD in geology. Despite major barriers and living with sickle cell anemia that prevented her from diving, she built a groundbreaking scientific career through laboratory research at the Smithsonian Institution, where she discovered a new genus of deep-sea coral, Rhombopsammia, and several new species that reshaped understanding of coral evolution. She later became a professor at Howard University, inspiring underrepresented students in STEM, and is remembered as a trailblazer who turned limitation into discovery and left a lasting legacy in marine science.

Grace O’Malley (1530–1603), known as Ireland’s “Pirate Queen,” was an extraordinary 16th-century seafarer, clan leader, and maritime commander who defied the gender expectations of her time. Born into the seafaring O’Malley clan on Ireland’s west coast, she grew up mastering navigation, tides, and Atlantic sailing, going on to lead fleets across Ireland, Spain, and Scotland in trade, piracy, and maritime control during a period dominated by male authority at sea. She built a powerful maritime presence through leadership, strategy, and resilience, establishing control over coastal waters and introducing toll systems on passing ships. Feared, respected, and politically influential, she even met Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich in 1593. Grace O’Malley is remembered as a fearless and outstanding maritime leader who forged her own legacy at sea and broke through the limits placed on women in maritime leadership and navigation.

Anisa Koci is a principal port project manager at Portsmouth International Port, working on major infrastructure and maritime construction projects. Tracy Edwards is a British sailor who transformed ocean racing by skippering the first all-female crew in the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race. Her team's success challenged stereotypes, inspired future generations of women in maritime careers, and helped promote greater equality across the sailing world.

Dawn Riley – World Champion Sailor and America's Cup Captain

Jessica Watson is an Australian sailor who inspired millions by sailing solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world at just 16 years old. Despite criticism that she was too young and concerns about her ability, she completed the 210-day voyage while overcoming dyslexia and some of the world's toughest ocean conditions. Her determination challenged perceptions of what young people, especially young women, can achieve and continues to inspire future generations

Tami Oldham Ashcraft is an American sailor, author and survivor whose remarkable story of resilience has inspired people around the world. At the age of 23, she survived 41 days alone at sea after Hurricane Raymond destroyed her yacht and claimed the life of her fiancé. Battling serious injuries, grief and extreme conditions, she navigated over 1,500 miles to safety. She later shared her experience in her memoir Red Sky in Mourning, inspiring others through her courage and determination.

Belinda Bennett is a British cruise ship captain from the island of Saint Helena who became the world's first Black woman to captain a commercial cruise ship. Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu was a Romanian engineer and one of the first women in Europe to earn an engineering degree. She was rejected from engineering studies in her home country because she was a woman, and later studied at the Royal Academy of Technology in Berlin, graduating in 1912. Throughout her career she faced sexism and disbelief in women’s ability to work in engineering, but went on to lead geological laboratories and contribute to major research in natural resources, including coal, gas, and minerals.

Radia Perlman is an American computer scientist and network engineer best known for inventing the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), a foundational technology that made modern computer networks stable and scalable. Mark Dean is an American computer scientist and engineer who played a major role in shaping the modern personal computer.
