As a Boat Designer or Naval Architect, you’ll be responsible for creating the plans, blueprints and specifications for all kinds of boats – from small yachts to large cruise ships and beyond.
We’ll provide all the skills you need to kickstart your career as a junior designer, where you’ll gain hands-on experience and build your portfolio ready to take on more complex projects and contribute to the development of cutting-edge watercrafts.

The marine industry is dynamic and constantly evolving, and boat design is an integral part of this. You'll enjoy a fast-paced and exciting work environment where no day is the same.
Working on the design and construction of marine vessels, you'll enjoy a varied and hands-on experience, regularly alternating between the CAD software studio, shipyards and marine fabrication facilities.
Vessels are often used for important work such as transportation, exploration and scientific research. Your work has the potential to impact the safety, efficiency and comfort of those who use them.
To become a successful boat designer, you’ll need to complete an apprenticeship, higher technical qualification or degree in boat design or naval architecture. Useful GCSEs include English, Maths, Physics, Art & Design, and IT. You’ll need to study a Level 2 Diploma and Level 3 Extended Diploma in Marine Engineering, or a relevant T Level or A Levels preferably including Maths and Physics. The South Coast Institute of Technology can offer you a range of routes from Level 2 to Level 7 to help kickstart your career in boat design.
