Apprenticeships are a great way to develop your knowledge, skills and experience whilst studying a qualification. On an apprenticeship you’ll earn a salary, gain a recognised qualification, and pay no tuition fees

    Types of Apprenticeships

    Intermediate Apprenticeship

Intermediate apprenticeships are the first level of apprenticeship. They are level 2 qualifications and are the equivalent of five good GCSE passes. They combine study towards a relevant level 2 qualification such as a Diploma or NVQ with practical training in the workplace.  You will typically learn on the job for 4 days of the week and learn at college 1 day a week.

    Advanced Apprenticeship

Advanced apprenticeships are level 3 qualifications and the equivalent to 2 A Level passes. You undertake the qualification alongside paid work. You will typically learn on the job for 4 days of the week and learn at college 1 day a week.

    Higher Apprenticeship

These are level 4 and 5 qualifications. Level 4 apprenticeships are equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree, or a Higher National Certificate (HNC). Level 5 apprenticeships are equivalent to a foundation degree, or a Higher National Diploma (HND). You undertake the qualification alongside paid work. You will typically learn on the job for 4 days of the week and learn at college or university 1 day a week.

    Degree Apprenticeship

A degree apprenticeship enables you to gain a full undergraduate or master’s degree while you work. Degree apprenticeships take three to six years to complete, depending on the course level. You undertake the qualification alongside paid work. You will typically learn on the job for 4 days of the week and learn at university 1 day a week.

    Apprenticeship Standards

Each apprenticeship will require students to demonstrate they have certain knowledge, skills, and behaviours. The knowledge, skills, and behaviours that they need to show have been identified by industry experts and collated in what is referred to as an apprenticeship standard. You can see these standards on the UK Government apprenticeship website. using the button below.

Just type in a keyword (for example “maritime” or “engineering”) and click on the level you are interested in, and it will show you all of the apprenticeships in that subject area. If you then click on the titles, you will be able to see the apprenticeship standards for that title.

    Things to Consider

You get lots of real-world hands on experience alongside your academic studies.

Your employer pays the course costs.

You’ll earn a salary whist you study.

You still get a recognised qualification as well as your apprenticeship.

You’re pretty much guaranteed a full-time job at the end of your apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship will often take longer than just studying an academic qualification.

You will have to work hard to complete both a paid job and a qualification simultaneously.

You’ll have to step up and be professional in the workplace.

You will have to make your own way to work every day and cover your own travel cost.

You will have shorter holidays because businesses don’t close for academic breaks.
