To become a boat builder, useful GCSEs include English, Maths, Engineering, Product Design, and Design Technology. Depending on qualifications and experience you’ll then need to study a Level 2 Diploma and Level 3 Extended Diploma in boatbuilding or related engineering course before progressing in to work. Although the engineering courses aren’t specially about boat building they will give you lots of transferable knowledge and skills useful for a career in boatbuilding. You don’t need a higher education qualification (Level 4+) to be a boat builder. You’re better off getting experience in the industry. But if you do decide to continue your studies then you could consider a higher education course in boat design or engineering. The South Coast Institute of Technology can offer you a range of routes into the industry including diplomas and apprenticeships.
