The South Coast Institute of Technology is proud to work hard for equality, diversity and inclusion within the maritime, engineering and digital industries, from every step from students to employers.
Our Human Library segment focuses on the stories of real people who have made a difference to STEM around the world and taught people that being a part of a minority doesn’t stop amazing people doing incredible things. We cover many different careers and STEM fields within this library, showing many brilliant people who overcame backlash or struggles due to certain characteristics.
Our hope is to inspire our students to do the same, as well as teach parents, teachers and employers of these role models and their impacts on our day to day lives.

Meet Captain Elizabeth Marami
Description
Captain Elizabeth Marami, Kenya’s first female marine pilot, has shattered barriers in a field long dominated by men. Rising from deck cadet to senior marine pilot, she has navigated global waters with courage, excellence, and resilience. As founder of Against the Tide, she champions gender equity and opens doors for young women in maritime careers. Her journey proves that Black women belong at the helm — and that no dream is too vast to pursue.
